Garam Masala

Garam Masala is an aromatic spice mix powder which is used in many North Asian dishes. The word “Garam” means “hot” and truly this spice mix brings warmth to every dish it is added too, and “Masala” means “Mixture” as it is a blend of fragrant spices. Spices used in preparing Garam Masala may differ from one region to the other and it can have anything from 8 to 32 different spices. The main ingredients of Garam Masala are coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cardamom, black pepper, fennel seeds, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves, star anise, nutmeg & mace. Garam Masala is used for both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

One can make this beautiful spice mix at home by mixing the whole spices and toasting it in a small pan until they change its colour to golden brown. Once the mixture is cooled downed completely, put it into an electric grinder and make a fine powder. You can also use tradition style of grinding on a pestle and mortar if you prefer a course texture. Now your masala is ready you can use it while cooking the dishes or sprinkle it as a garnish to season the dishes at the end of cooking. Its best suited for recipes from India, Pakistan & south Asia.

You can also buy a pack of readymade Garam Masala from any Indian grocery store or buy online from Value Supermarket which sell’s authentic Indian spices, they stock all different pack sizes. Be careful in choosing the brand because cheaper brands can use inferior quality of whole spices which may not give good results.

All spices including this masala should be stored in an airtight container to preserve its aroma and taste.
